When I first started my marriage and family therapy private practice in 1986, it was considered bad form to advertise your services. It was not considered unethical, just something a “professional” did not do.

That never really made a whole lot of sense to me.

I think it came from the never was true notion that all you had to do was hang up your shingle and the clients would flock to your door.

Breaking the rules

So when one of my colleagues and I put an ad in the paper for a teen therapy group we were running, you would have thought we had shot someone. The reaction varied from stunned silence to comments such as “What are you guys, ambulance chasers?”

Well, what made all the flack easier to take, besides the fact I have a fairly thick skin, is that it worked. We tapped into an underserved niche (teens and their parents), the practice took off, and I’ve been busy ever since.

Unexpected results

Because I had run a few adds in the local paper, when it came time to interview an expert, the reporters came to me. For years I had everything from one line quotes to full feature interviews in the paper. This was nice, as it upped my perceived “expert-ability” and brought in many clients.

And then came the mother lode. I was asked to write a weekly mental health column for the local paper. This brought in a flood of clients. That would have been great enough in and of itself. Then the parent company of the local paper picked up the column for syndication and began to run it all over the country and then all over the world.

Almost 20 years later

Here it is almost 20 years later, and at the last local marriage and family therapy association party, I had people following me out to my car asking questions about how I do what I do. The funny thing is that some of these folks asking for tips are some of the same ones that gave me flack years ago.

I don’t tell you this to impress you. I tell you this to impress upon you the answer to the question in the title of this article - “Is it wrong to let others know what you do?”

The answer is a resounding NO! Not only is it acceptable to let others know what you do, when you have something inside you that can help others, you not only have the right to let others know what you offer.

I believe you have the obligation to let others know what you have to offer.

If you do well with your business, you may want to incorporate it. There are many advantages gained by incorporating. For one, if (and this is a BIG if, but you never know), if you are ever sued, your personal assets will be considered separate from your business assets. On the off chance that anything like that ever happens, you will be immensely thankful that you incorporated.

It works the other way too, if you are ever personally sued, all your business assets are safe. Legally, you and your corporation are two entirely separate entities.

Another reason for incorporating is to save money on taxes. Talk to an accountant about the different ways to incorporate - if you qualify for an S-corporation or an LLC, you may save considerably in taxes. Plus, it’s always nice to pay your taxes on a monthly or at least a quarterly basis rather than owe one giant, lump sum to Uncle Sam on April 15th.

Many a business has gone bankrupt due to unpaid taxes.

Another benefit of incorporating is to convey professionalism. Most people recognize that the abbreviation of Inc or LLC after a company name is evidence of incorporation. Your prospects may take you more seriously. And every little bit helps.

You may get a few more sales just due to the fact that you look like a real company!

So talk to your accountant today and find out if incorporating is the right move for you to make. It takes some time to start the process, but can be well worth it in many instances.

Golf swing help is a thought in most amateur golfers minds on a daily basis. The never-ending search for a quick fix to your golf swing. I receive emails every day reading how golfers have tried “everything” and still haven’t improved. They have reached a state of desperation in their golf game.

Unless you have 8 hours a day to work on your golf swing like the pros have, you will not be able to achieve that ultimate goal of consistent performance. The golf swing technique of today has become so complicated, that golfers are “paralyzed by over-analysis”.

I’ve heard some great analogies lately!

How about walking? Would we think of every biomechanical movement in every joint of our body when we walk? I don’t think so. If that happened, we’d have a lot of frustrated, immobile people out there.

The same thing holds true with golf. Having a basic understanding of how to hit the ball to your chosen target is critical, but after that, you shouldn’t have to think of 30 different things to swing the club to make this happen.

The end goal in golf is to get your ball to a target as accurately as you can, and then get it in the hole. With that being said, why are so many golfers not improving? The answer and solution are quite easy.

It’s what I say more than a dozen times every day to golfers. “It’s your body that swings the club, not the other way around”.

Your swing is only as good as your current ‘physical’ capabilities. Don’t you think that makes sense? I mean…if your body is tight (inflexible), do you think you’ll be able to make a nice full backswing with minimal tension? No way! That’s a physical impossibility.

The ONLY way to be able to achieve optimal swing mechanics with minimal effort is to improve your body’s ability to reach these physical points in the golf swing consistenly. Whether it’s a 90 degree shoulder turn, or hips slightly open with your head stationary behind the ball at impact.

It makes total sense to break down the swing fault you are currently dealing with and look at the physical requirement needed from your body. The more involved I get with improving golf performance, the more interested I’m getting in the biomechanics of the golf swing and how to improve them with the physical approach (both strength and flexibility).

I’ve seen dramatic results from members of my websites and customers of my golf improvement products, which tells me this is the way to improve your golf swing the quickest. I’ve had golfers literally tell me they wish they would have taken this approach 20 years ago!

Look around you. Many of the above type of items are also used as business/corporate gifts. Items under this category sometimes also fall under higher price ranges too such as insulated travel mugs, clocks, messenger bags, polo shirts, fleece blankets, paper weights and more. These are generally sent to clients and vendors of a business to show their appreciation. They can be sent around the holidays, given out at receptions or just sent around an event specific to the company sending them. According to a Baylor University study, over half of the companies in America take part in this practice, and 68% of them find them to be very effective in helping achieve their business objectives. Premiums

Sometimes promotional items aren’t free. But, the customer is not exactly paying for them either. Welcome to the world of premiums! If you sign up for this, you’ll get this for free! And, this gimmick works! Have you ever donated to a charitable organization (like the Sierra Club) for a free newsletter subscription and t-shirt? Have you ever applied for a credit card to get an umbrella? Have you ever pledged to your local PBS station during a membership campaign for a Sesame Street plush toy? Or, have you ever switched banks to get a free beach blanket, or signed up for a health club for a free gym bag? These are just an inkling of ways companies use premiums to win your business. Premiums are basically promotional products used as an incentive to gain your business. Many times, the item is not given until an obligation us fulfilled. So, if your company is seeking membership, subscriptions or even sales, attaching a premium is a smart way to attract new business!

Recognition Awards

Sometimes promotional items are created solely for inside purposes, such as the case with recognition awards. These can range from plaques and pins to jackets and messenger bags, and many other types of gifts. These can be used for reaching and exceeding goals, perfect attendance, leadership qualities, promotions, inside contests and much more. Unlike ad specialties and premiums, which cater to the public, these cater to employees to motivate and boost morale within the place they work. While the recognition may mean more than the actual item, it serves as a reminder of accomplishments. When others see someone with an award, their own performance may increase. In a way, a recognition award is sort of like a premium after all- there is an incentive to earn one.

Other Uses

Sometimes promotional items are given out to customers as prizes as events. This is similar to recognition awards, only these are usually smaller ticket items given to random customers. An example would be a special sale or promotion where people can enter to win at the store, perhaps there is a grand prize of a big-ticket item and runner-ups will be selected to win imprinted prizes donning your logo. Also, items like inflatables (balloons and other shapes) will draw attention to a business and are indeed considered promotional items. Also, everybody has seen items with logos up for sale in gift shops- think tourist attraction, or gift shops at the end of a company tour (Hershey, Crayola factory, etc). These are still promotional items, but are considered souvenirs and are bought my consumers. Shot glasses, pint glasses, mugs, license plate frames, bumper stickers, salt and pepper shakers and more can fall in to this category!
