The Doctoral gown has two basic shapes that are derived from Oxford and Cambridge. There is the Oxford shape gown whose sleeves are bell shaped and the Cambridge gown whose sleeves are long and open. There is also a second type of Cambridge doctoral gown which is made up of a pattern that is between the Oxford and Cambridge shape. Another type of doctoral gown is known as the undress gown. In some universities this gown is different from the master’s gown while in others it is the same. It is usually black, and though it is still relevant in older universities, it is rarely worn nowadays.
