Osteoporosis: What Can I Do to Prevent It

Osteoporosis is a silent disease. You normally don’t know it until something like a fracture occurs. In reality, your bones have been loosing strength for years.

There are millions of people with osteoporosis, and the vast majority of them are women. Bone is a living tissue that consistently breaks down and rebuilds. As we enter our 40’s and 50’s, the rebuilding is having a hard time keeping up with the breaking down…thus a net loss.

While some of the risk factors cannot be modified (family history, small body frame size, racial/ethnic makeup, surgery (removal of ovaries) and menopause), other factors can be modified, and thus prevent or delay the onset of osteoporosis.

So what can you do?

Eating a diet rich in calcium throughout life is important. What does that mean? Low fat dairy food, canned fish with soft bones such as salmon, dark green leafy vegetables and calcium fortified foods.

1. If you need a supplement, the current recommendations are for people over 50 to have about 1200mg per day between diet and supplementation. Studies on women with osteoporosis in nursing homes have been shown to have a reduction of fractures just from calcium and vitamin D without other interventions.

2. Vitamin D is necessary for your body to absorb the calcium. Being out in the sun for 20 minutes every day is usually sufficient. Foods that are high in vitamin D include eggs, fatty fish, cereals and fortified milk. Many calcium supplements and multivitamins have vitamin D as well. Recommendations include 400 IU of Vitamin D per day if you are less than 70 years of age, and 600 IU if you are over 70.

3. Exercise! Once again the “E” word presents itself. Weight bearing exercise actually prevents the loss of bone. The stress on bone when you walk, play tennis, jog or dance actually stimulates your bone to increase its density. Not only that, but your improved muscle strength will protect you if you should fall. Once again, the current recommendation for exercise is 30 minutes of activity daily.

4. Some medications can increase your risk for developing osteoporosis. For example steroids, some anti-seizure medications, some cancer medications, and long term use of Depo-Provera (birth control). If you take too much thyroid medication, or your thyroid glad is overactive your bone could be stimulated to break down faster. Talk with your provider to see if any modifications can be made.

What else? Smoking, carbonated beverages and excessive alcohol have all been implicated in increasing you risk for osteoporosis. Consider eliminating, or at least reducing these habits from your life.

Recommendations:

1. Get a gone density scan (DEXA). They are non-invasive and give an accurate measurement of your bone density. The heel test will only give you a ball park figure, and are not always accurate. The DEXA scan will give you a T-score which will tell you and your provider if your density is normal, if you have osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis), or osteoporosis. With that information you and your provider can decide on the best plan of action for you.

2. If you have osteoporosis, follow the treatment recommendation of your provider, incorporate the dietary and activity recommendation made here, and work to reduce your risk of falls in your home.

3. Good health practices will go a long way in preventing and treating any problems. Once again, diet and exercise play a major role in this largely preventable disease.

Women today want to live long, healthy and active lives. Prevention and early treatment of osteoporosis will go a long way towards vibrant and successful aging.

Lessons Learned Hard

Many of us seek consolation in the words of Frank Sinatra, “I did it my way.” I say many of us because I feel this trap has snared more than just me. Oh, it is a trap, alright, a way to defend our defiance, combat accountability, and excuse our own stupidity.

Maybe, we don’t even say it aloud if our inflated egos and economic attainments have enabled us to dupe ourselves and fool a few others? Well, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could learn from the mistakes of others rather than only our own?

Scripture says, “There is a way that seems right to a man but the path thereof leads to death and destruction.” The Bible is chucked full of examples of foolish men who learned that their ways didn’t work, while God’s way invariably did, at least, for those who were still alive and willing to make life-course corrections.

The good news is that this readily available wisdom applies to me. I am still alive. Multiple Sclerosis has forced me to make some life-course corrections too. Best of all, I have been given a chance to pause, reflect on my previous mistakes, and admit my fallibility both in sound judgment and in my treatment of others.

So, now I write some of the understandings that I have been led to in Free Reprint articles and have published a mystery novel, For Sale By Owners:FSBO, which discloses other mistakes too many unthinking and “did it my way” people make. I selected the novel format because it allows me the freedom to create hypothetical scenarios and fictional characters to expose real dangers.

Here is an unsolicited e-mail I received from one reader:

Subject: Your Novel

Hi Russ,

I’ve just finished, in your words, “a very good read”.

The name of the book is “FSBO” which I enjoyed thoroughly.

You covered it all, bureaucracy, politics, sex, drugs, crime and day-to-day Real
Estate activity.

You have a talent that MS can’t touch.

Even though I have Master’s in journalism and communications, and have read a lot, I think you could teach many published writers a thing or two about story telling.

I hope to hear more from you. Keep up the good work.

Very Best Regards!

Frank Bush

Coming from a person that I have never met, I felt my work was appreciated. At least, the reader did not find the novel boring. If you too read FSBO, I hope you will also send me your comments.

As one who has had to revise my own thinking about many things, I can say I am truly thankful that I have time to reflect, implement more life-course corrections, make some amends, and draw refreshment from the wells of others who have taken their time to write and publish understandings gleaned from life-lessons. By so doing, less of life’s lessons need be “Lessons Learned Hard.”

Buying a Glass Transportation Rack: What You Should Find out about Carbon Steel, Aluminum &Amp; Stainless Steel Glass Truck Racks

Acquiring a glass rack and glass truck is not the same as buying a different piece of glass machinery. While the glass business advances, the machinery that makes it possible, has as well.

The effective, controlled delivery and shipping of flat glass and its dozens of applications, created the wide range of glass rack designs to meet these needs.

Considering the large number of routes available, an informed due diligence looking at your businesses individual goals is a must to buying a glass rack. Even though its easy to purchase a standard glass truck and rack from most equipment makers, for little or no additional surcharge you get a fully-customized glass rack designed to meet your exact needs.

Figuring out your specific requirements in a few ways can be helpful as you decide on the combination of body and chassis that will get the most out of your glass rack and truck.

Keep in mind that bodies should hold up for at least 2 or 3 chassis. Planning ahead that far takes a good deal of consideration due to the unfortunate fact that the glass rack body can only work with a certain chassis type design. The chassis type will also dictate major considerations of the body type such as rack size, ledge width, and payload.

Glass racks usually are common in two or three base materials: stainless steel, aluminum and carbon steel. Each material comes with benefits and drawbacks.

Carbon Steel is the least expensive rack material, even though it may result in unexpected maintenance expense to keep it in good shape and clean, especially in rust-pronehumid weather.

Aluminum racks are favored for its lightweight density. When fully anodized, painted and polished, it will stay in great shape without much maintenance for years and years. Glass racks made from aluminum are a bit pricier to repair and is more costly all-around than steel.

Stainless Steel is the best choice for those concerned with durability and anti-corrosive materials. When measured to the right specs, it can prove many years of just basic care and reliable lifetime. Due to stainless steels rust resistant composition, etching the front for painting is hard, and so the bodies are not painted. An exposed steel look is a steel racks usual appearance. Steel is great and its only negative thus far is its higher investment price tag.

Debt Consolidation for Americans

Times are hard for many Americans, with interest rates going up, sky high gas prices, and overall inflation, so it’s not surprising that many families find themselves in financial difficulty that’s frightening enough to cause them to seek professional help.

When faced with mounting financial obligations, it’s easy to fall prey to any number of the advertisements you see on television, in magazines and newspapers, on the radio, in your email box, or on the Internet, promising to either eliminate your debt altogether–or to “consolidate” your debt. In this article, we’re going to look at how the debt consolidation process works.

It’s a tempting thing to have a company take all your bills, roll them into one package, and then have you pay them off with one lump monthly payment, often less than the combined total of your individual bills. But let’s look at what’s really involved. The pitch is that debt consolidation companies will reduce your monthly payment on what’s known in the industry as UNSECURED DEBT, which includes credit cards, utilities, or anything else you bought that wasn’t secured by a piece of property that could be foreclosed upon by the lender. Your home mortgage, on the other hand, is a secured debt, which is the key to how debt consolidation companies function.

When you contact a debt consolidation company, the first thing you’ll find yourself doing is answering a number of questions concerning your home–how much equity you have, your monthly payments, how long you’ve been in the home, and other things. Since your home mortgage can (and often is) the largest monthly payment you have, you might be lulled into thinking that they’re merely asking in order to add your house payment into your monthly debt total.

However, there’s something potentially ominous behind those seemingly innocent questions. The company is asking questions about what’s generally the most valuable asset of a family–their home. Why? Because their plan is to combine all your unsecured debt and turning it into SECURED debt–by tying it to your home.

There are several potential dangers involved in that. First, if you find that you can’t make the new, lower payments in the future, you’ll find yourself not only continuing to have bad credit (which is something that you could ultimately live with, even as difficult as it would be). But you could actually find yourself losing your HOME, as well–a situation that could be life-threatening!

But debt consolidation companies say they can lower your monthly payments by a significant amount, and that’s why you sought their help, right? Well, your must understand that the debt consolidation company won’t lower either your overall debt load or interest rates. What they’ll do is extend the life of your loans by transferring them from short-term (1-3 years) into long-term loans, which can take as long as 30 YEARS to pay off. You may lower your monthly payment, but you’ll be paying up to THREE TIMES as much for those things you owe money on–for DECADES to come!

So, regardless of how much debt you’re faced with, be smart, and before you sign with a debt consolidation company, ask them EXACTLY how they plan to help you, how long it will take to pay off your debt, and what they’ll get out of it, since they’re in business to make money, just like every other company in the world.

Why Do Inspirational People Always Come From Adversity?

Have you ever asked yourself; why do inspirational people in our society always seem to come from such adversity in their backgrounds? Either it is self-induced or they came from a very tough situation and sometimes both for instance the story of Rocky.

Have you ever noticed that inspirational speakers and authors always seem to come from adversity? Why is this? Well it is because they have a story to tell. And that is a story that some people can relate with and if they can overcome those supreme adversities then of course the rest of the population who has less adversity in their lives should be able to do the same.

Additionally we know that such adversity and triumph over it brings with it an inspirational story. You see, adversity builds character; Hey that reminds me I must have a ton of personal character so if you would like to buy some then look me up okay?

So that is why inspirational people always seem to come from adversity. The rest of the population wants to overcome their adversity in life whatever that may be. By listening to inspirational people who have overcome much greater adversity than us, it gives us the courage to press on and persevere.

If you have much adversity in your life and have overcome it to become successful, perhaps you might cheer on others as you share some wisdom with the rest of the world to help them over come their small shortcomings. Please consider this in 2006.

Mastery of Relationships, Psychic Sex Connections, Energy Vampires, Implants and Meditation Part One

Relationship Psychic Sex Connections exist in all people and in general mess up their lives. Instead they should Enhance our lives and lives of everyone around us. With Meditation Techniques we can learn The Mastery of Relationships!!

We can learn how to Get Rid of all Energy Vampires!

For all intent and purpose, Psychic Sex Connections or “strings” in relationships are very similar to umbilical connections or even electric and telephone wires, except they exist on the astral dimensional planes in all relationships. They can be very thin, or very thick, and can appear as very light or very dark streamers coming out of your energy fields/bodies.

These strings, psychic sex connections, stretch between all chakras, chakra to chakra and in the case of Relationships from abdomen to abdomen and with sex, from base chakra to base chakra.

Relationship Psychic Sex Connections can be superficially hooked onto the surface of - or more deeply plugged into the very cores of - your numerous energy fields, chakras and/or dimensional bodies.

Initially these relationship hooks or plugs seem pretty innocuous to the astral spirit, at first glance appearing very light, maybe even golden and brightly colored but Psychic Sex Connections in Relationships, no matter how attractive or light or energizing, are ties that bind, and as Gautama Buddha said, thousands of years ago, “Attachment leads to Pain”.

One of our Meditation students, Susan Macri, a medical doctor living at the ashram of Sathya Sai Baba in India teaches “cutting the ties that bind” to 2000 people a year in her workshops there, yet found it necessary to learn the Advanced Initiations of Energy Enhancement to further augment her knowledge.

These Psychic Sex Connections can limit your freedom in Relationships if you can’t manage them through knowledge of the Initiations of Energy Enhancement in Relationships…gilded chains are still chains, and a gilded cage is still a cage …. Any relationship Psychic Sex Connection can be made to appear beautiful and of the light, yet one should ask ” where does this Psychic Sex Connection lead to, or come from?”

When followed back to their origins, we have found sometimes people are unconsciously connected to people who are sucking their energies. We call these people Energy Vampires. They can also be connected in to bad entities or consciousnesses, pulling these “strings” these Psychic Sex Connections - See the movie “The Matrix” WHERE PEOPLE ARE TURNED INTO BATTERIES.

You usually have a relationship with badness usually through being Implanted. The Energy Blockage or Psychic Virus implanted in you, always sends energy back to the person who implanted you. Some of these energy vampires have thousands of connections with people sending energy back to them!

Relationship Psychic Sex Connections might be seen, felt or sensed by you feeling tired and lacking in energy, or attracted by things you know are bad for you or even becoming addicted, but there are many connections that are imperceptible to most people.

It is handy to work with people who are experienced in these matters as they can help you spot the connections and help you release them, but unless you learn how to do it for yourself with advanced methods of meditation, eventually you will be implanted and vampirised of your energy again.

The bleed through of negative psychic impulses, messages and energies from one being to another through these Psychic Sex Connections can often and easily act to interfere or distort the integrity and conscious energetic experience of your own space.

This may be something most people are totally unaware of… as everyone falsely assumes that all their impulses, thoughts and feelings originate from themselves where in actuality much comes through being given Implants and addictions by these and other bad people.

The relationship Psychic Sex Connection controls them.

These matters have been known about and written about and worked with in meditation for thousands of years and indeed it is our experience in working with many clients.

Ancient man knew this…. It is good that there are movies such as “The 6th Sense” or “The Matrix” … they are to remind us that this phenomena does exist and has been written about in all civilisations.

What Is a Hard Drive and What Do They Do

HDDs (introduced in 1956 as data storage for an IBM accounting computer) were originally developed for use with general purpose computers. In the 21st century, applications for HDDs have expanded to include digital video recorders, digital audio players, personal digital assistants, digital cameras and video game consoles. In 2005 the first mobile phones to include HDDs were introduced by Samsung and Nokia. The need for large-scale, reliable storage, independent of a particular device, led to the introduction of embedded systems such as RAID arrays, network attached storage (NAS) systems and storage area network (SAN) systems that provide efficient and reliable access to large volumes of data.

Also, due to a complete absence of moving parts, SSDs have greatly increased longevity and reliability. The downside to these drives, despite all their amazing benefits, are very high cost per megabyte of capacity, and their low capacity. It is unfortunate that both these traits are what will really stop a consumer from adopting a technology that is superior. There can be no doubt that SSD is the future, but that future is assuredly not now. However, in light of the low capacities and high prices, the technology still has enough merit to be featured in new notebooks arriving in 2007. Reduced power consumption, reduced heat and a long battery life spells great success for this technology in the mobile arena.

Snowflakes are US

Sometimes inspiration is found in the most unusual places. Today, it was a car commercial. In the commercial, the uniqueness of the car was equated with a snowflake. Millions of snowflakes, no one alike, each unique and beautiful in its own way. People are snowflakes. The thought is cause for a real pause and genuine self reflection.

Each and every person is original and amazing. It’s been said a million times in a million different ways and is one of the rare, positive, universally agreed upon notions. It’s been repeated time and time again for a reason - it’s true! Why then is lip service given to this amazing aspect of people? Each of us has great things about us. Its our compassion for others, our ability with oil paints, our dedication as a mother, our finesse in giving talks and presentations, or that special thing that makes you, you.

So often, we focus on our weaknesses, our regrets, and our mistakes. What we don’t fully realize or admit is that this focus is our biggest mistake. Each mistake, each weakness, and each missed opportunity is mirrored by our remarkable strengths, successes, and experiences. Without a doubt, our goodness and beauty far, far overshadows our shortcomings. Embrace the wonder of you. Embrace the beauty of you. Pay attention to the mistakes and the weaknesses for they are your teacher. The bumps are there to help us learn and grow. But we cannot see them for what they are when we do not fully appreciate and genuinely love ourselves. You are a snowflake.

The Power of Words to Wound and to Heal

There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence.

The first day, the boy drove 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled.

He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive nails into the fence.

Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it, and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed, and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, and I am proud of you. Now look at the holes in the fence. It will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.”

Yet, we so easily verbally wound those around us.

The tongue is such a small part of the body and yet so incredibly powerful for both good and bad.

A verbal wound can hurt as much as a physical wound. This is because the wrong words at the wrong time can ruin everything.

At the same time, the right words at the right time can change everything.

My challenge is to consider the impact of our words in the coming days. Things to consider include:

• Does this need to be said?

• If it does need to be said, how can I say it well without harm?

• How would I feel if someone said to me what I am about to say or just said?

• Are there words I have inflicted upon someone that I need to clean up? Even if the scars won’t disappear, the right words now may heal the wound.

It’s been said that if you who can conquer your tongue, you can conquer just about anything.

Get a Flatter Tummy

Do you notice yourself in this position also? Finding that your gut is inflating or just heading due south. Is there too much stomach for too little pants waist? Are you understanding that your years of television and remote control, eating up french-fried potatoes and boozing has finally caught up with you, and you are wearing love handles? Have you lost your six pack abs(six-pack–abs.net)? You are not alone in this kettle of fish and there is hope for you.

If you have too much flesh close to your breadbasket you need to start some abs workouts. This is beneficial for both men and women as more sinewy abs result in fewer lower back problems. When your abdominals are toned up your back is also beefed up. Some simple workouts to drop off those love handles are sit ups and crunches.

With a focus on the lower back try lying on your stomach. Lifting your feet and knees off of the floor and lightly kicking your legs as if you were swimming. Do this for 15 seconds and rest for 30 and repeat.

It is in all likelihood a great idea to cut the salt in your meals. It is accepted to link salt and salt rich foods with heart troubles and risk of stroke. Salt also results in water retention which can make a fat stomach look even bigger. Don’t add extra salt to foods and stay away from processed foods. Drinking water can also help you to lose the spare tire. Water not only serves to keep the body hydrated, it also helps your body to metabolize stored fat into energy and cuts your appetite.

A good idea would be to cease the boozing to reduce caloric intake. Yes, I know, we are both frustrated that alcoholic drinks are not a water substitute. Alcohol contains a lot of what is referred to empty calories which tend to get fixed around the middle area creating spare tires. No need to cut alcohol out entirely, just keep a tally of how much you drink and reduce it; same strategy as cutting back your food intake.
