Barricades

In poker, there are times you have to prepare for. There will be times you will want to get the most money in with an edge, and you need to be prepared for that. There are also times where you’re going to face a marginal situation and need to know how to lose the least amount of money; you’ll need to be prepared for that too.

What we often don’t talk about though, is the need to put up the sandbags to prevent ourselves from getting into those marginal situations in the first place. Sure we won’t be able to avoid them all, but with the right preparation, we can avoid some of them.

With that in mind, let’s talk about prevention of money leaking like from your stack like you had a bad water pipe. When you’re in a situation where you have a garbage hand, and you know your poker online opponent has a garbage hand too, you want to avoid a showdown. Why? Well, if you go to showdown, his garbage may be better than your garbage, and you end up losing. If you play with aggression here, you have a better chance of getting someone with a garbage hand off of their hand and folding. No need to leave bad money on the table without a fight.

Mike Caro also posted some great insight that deals not with play specifically, but with the player to the left of you. The player to the left of you always has positional advantage over you. It is in your best interest not to piss him off. Avoid checkraising this person, and declaring all out jihad. Instead, befriend him. Being cordial here can save you some big money as he’ll be less likely to use his advantage against you. It’s just human nature. All about prevention at the casino.

What Are Charity Game Ticket Games (or Pulltabs)? - Part One

Ever play scratch tickets at a gas station or a grocery store? Charity Tickets (Pulltabs) are a gaming instrument similar to scratch tickets except instead of scratching off a fine dust all over your fingers, you simply snap open the die-cut ‘windows’ and see if your symbols match any of the winning combos on the front of the ticket. Typically the window combo you want will be horizontal, but there are occasional tickets that allow for vertical or even diagonal wins as well. Pulltabs are most often sold by nonprofit or charitable organizations at carnivals, bingos, or in club rooms.

There are many styles of games to choose from, though most include instant winners in one way or another. Here’s a quick summary of the most common types of charity tickets:

Instant Win Games

These are self-explanatory. You play, look for a winning pattern, and if you win you can redeem your ticket for your winnings immediately.

Seal Card Games

Seal Card Games are similar to the instant win games, but they include a few cards within the deal that a player can hold on to for a chance to win a bigger prize later on. Players who receive one of these ‘hold cards’ will hold onto it until the tickets are sold out and the caller calls out the winning numbers from the ’seal card.’

For Honest Players Try Microstakes

Poker is typically a game of deception and trickery. People try to bluff, to hide their tells, to make believe that they are something they are not. Sometimes you just want a straightforward honest game of online poker. Sometimes you just need something simple to balance out an otherwise hectic life. You’re not going to find a simple game at the normal stakes. Everyone is too busy at the higher stakes trying to implement fancy strategies to play a simple and straightforward poker online game. If you want to play against honest to a fault players, you need to play at microstakes. Microstakes players never even attempt to hide what they have in their casino hand. This could be a result f inexperience or lack of poker education, but the result is the same for you. You end up playing against honest players that aren’t going to try anything fancy. There aren’t going to be any bluffs, image conflicts, or wild attempts to project personalities. You don’t have to worry about anyone at microstakes trying out that new move that they saw on the coverage of the WSOP. Extravagance and wildness just doesn’t go with the microstakes mentality. There is just poker at the microstakes level. Plain, simple, honest poker.

Positional Opportunity

In the game of poker, several factors influence how each player can play a hand. Starter cards are the first and obvious guideline. Then you must consider the types of players populating the table and adjust your strategy to your opponents’ different styles. Another critical element in how to play the cards is one’s position in the betting round.

The players seated to the immediate left of the dealer button are in early position, and are the blind spots in Texas Hold ‘em. They put in their blind bets, and if they continue in the hand, the small is first to act, then the big blind is second during ensuing rounds.

Players in early position are at some disadvantage because they must act before anyone else with no information about the hands they are up against. When in early position, it’s best to only play very strong poker online cards.

Those in middle position - seated 3-6 places to the left of the blinds - have a little more information to base their decisions on, but it is still incomplete because there are bettors behind these seats who might raise. Players in middle position can play slightly more speculative hands pre-flop but should fold if the flop misses their hands and there are still players in contention behind these seats.

Players in late position have the advantage during betting because they have seen what the other players ahead of them have done. The player on the button immediately to the right of the small blind has the last betting option every round after the flop. The seat to the immediate right of the button is known as the “cut off” because this player may put out a big bet in front of the button, and cause that player to fold. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

Streaks - Nit it up or Keep it up?

What do you do when you’re running bad and the streak is lingering longer than you’ve ever been stuck before?

Some say nit-it-up. When people use the term nit, they mean an incredibly tight poker online player. It’s usually used in the cash game realm. When people start losing more than they are used to, their initial reaction is normally to play a little looser. They play bigger pots to get closer to even. Instead of playing perfect poker, they are playing a frustrated form of catch-up.

Then, at long last, decide to play tighter than ever-before in hopes of making the money. The problem is, if you’re playing multitable poker tournaments, one or two min-cashes aren’t going to balance out all the buy-ins you’ve lost. And if you’re playing too tight in a cash game, you might be limiting your losses, but you’re not going to win a whole lot unless you cold deck someone. It will be easy for players to know when you have a good hand, and you will fold to every continuation bet on a flop that you’ve missed.

So, the answer is to keep playing optimally. Don’t change anything. If you’re running your KK into AA, don’t play KK smaller, just hope you don’t run into AA next time. If your AQ is constantly losing to lesser aces, don’t sweat it. Variance is cruel. I’ve lost dozens of sit and go’s in a row without cash. It turns around. You beat AJ with 6, 8 and runner-runner a flush on someone and you win it back and feel on top of the world. Just stay within your bankroll and don’t change your online poker game. Unless you’re actually playing badly!

Playing Bar Poker

Among the major poker online rush that’s come along with the rise of the World Series of Poker and poker online gambling, most local bars and pubs these days are offering at least a night or two a week events known as ‘Texas Hold Em Night’ or some variation therein. While some of these events are attended by actually skilled players, it is pretty common to find that in most of these events, being free and set in a venue where alcohol is served, the players are, shall we say ‘less attentive than others.’ That is to say that in many of these kinds of poker online games you will find looser than average action, with players who won’t fold any kind of piece of a hand no matter what the bet is. Old women who’ve hardly stepped beyond the gin rummy circuit will call you down without even a pair, and somehow, even more than usual, they seem to find a way to take it down. The key to winning these events, then, in the face of such loose fields, is to play straight ahead, ABC poker, with no frills. Bluffing or semi-bluffing before you have a made hand is pretty much asking to have your chips taken from you, as making a big lay down just isn’t part of the average bar poker attendant’s range. Wait for your hands, put your chips in, and hope they hold up.

France and Legalisation of Online Poker

France is doing something I have advocated for a long time, which is a smart thing to do: legalizing online poker in the country and taxing it.

According to gambling newsletter PokerPages, France’s budget minister Eric Woerth shared the tax structure which will accompany a bill to open up online gambling and online casino games to compete with France’s state monopolies (Francais des Jeux and Pari-Mutuel Urbain (PMU)). Woerth said he foresees a 2% tax on online poker, and a 7.5% tax on sports and horse racing. The proposed gaming bill will be presented to ministers at the end of March or the beginning of April according to the Budget Minister. It is likely to be voted on in the parliament and the senate before the 2009 summer recess, PokerPages reported. Woerth added that the opening up of the online gambling market should come into effect Jan. 1, 2010. The change in French policy towards online gaming comes largely from pressure from the European Commission, prompted chiefly by objections raised by the sportsbetting sector.

online poker should, of course, be legal in all sovereign nations of this world. And if it is legal, it can be taxed, which adds much needed revenue to countries that are financially struggling, and even those that are not. Everyone wins: the governments win, because that get to tax yet another commodity, and we, the poker players win, because we get to enjoy our game free of legal hassle.

Is Texas Holdem Legal in California?

California has a long and twisted history with the game of Texas Holdem that may be confusing to the beginner player. Despite the state’s proximity to Texas, it seems that Texas Holdem didn’t make its way across the border until the early 1980s. At this time in history, California had legal gambling saloon where individuals could play traditional varieties of poker, for example seven card stud or three card draw. However, the California legislature immediately banned Texas Hold’em along with a version of poker called stud horse.

In 1988, some concerned citizens petitioned for Texas Hold’em to be considered legally distinct from stud horse. After the court battle of Tibbetts v. Van De Kamp, 271 Cal. Rptr. 792 , the state of California officially ruled that stud horse and Texas Hold’em were different versions of poker.

The current legality of Texas Hold’em in California is further complicated by the presence of casino on Native American reservations. Reservations are considered a legal entity separate from the jurisdiction of the state of California, so the state’s rules about gambling do not apply to the casinos on tribal land. The more prominent Native American casinos feature Texas Holdem as one of their more popular table games. The popularity of Texas Hold’em is fueled mainly by mainstream media representations of the game as cool, hip, and glamorous. While Texas Hold’em is popular at the places where it can be played in California, it is not necessarily legal to play Texas Hold’em outside of designated areas.

Basic Sugar Glider Care - Bonding

The health and happiness of your baby sugar glider will ultimately depend on the bonding process - how it connects with you and your family. A baby sugar glider is extremely susceptible in its first few weeks of life and can even bond to the inanimate objects that make up the interior of your home - for this reason we recommend that, when out of their cage, you keep very young sugar gliders in your hands or about your person. Limiting their movements to such close quarters will create a much greater bond between the sugar glider and you and your family.

The depth of the bond between you and your sugar glider will depend on how much time you spend with it in the first few weeks that it lives with you. The bonding process will occur both more quickly and more effectively in direct relation to how much time you spend together. We recommend a period of a couple of days of de-stress time upon arrival at your home before you begin to take them out of the cage. Sugar gliders will recognize you by your smell, so by putting an article of your clothing in its cage by the heat rock will improve the bonding process.

An important factor to keep in mind during the early days and weeks is the newness of the sugar glider’s surroundings. After its very early life in its mother’s marsupial pouch, your baby is used to a tight, dark, warm space. This gives a clue as how best to care for it when it is scared. A scared sugar glider will begin to chatter and may swipe like a bear. In this instance, you must hold it FIRMLY to create the tight, dark, warm space it is used to in order to calm it down.
