Chipping - Your Ticket to Par

Scoring in golf can sometimes be about cutting your loses. Nothing can save you more strokes than your short game. No matter how bad your swing is, a great short game will help you play a good round. This is why I call the short game “Your ticket to Par”. There are many aspects to the short game, this newsletter will cover some of the basic strategies for pitch shots. There will be more on the short game in later Newsletters.

Any lofted shot towards the green from ten or more yards away is typically called a pitch. Pitches can land on the green with a forward roll (forward spin) or with a backwards roll (backspin). Television seems to glamorize the backspin. A Tour player that lands a ball on the green past the hole and has the bell backspin toward the hole will be on the news high lights for a week. Anytime I’m on the course a someone creates backspin, it is considered a great shot.

Well, in my opinion, only shots that get the ball close to the hole are great shots. Rarely does this include backspin. On ninety percent of all pitch shots, you should play the ball with a forward spin. The goal is to have the ball land in front of the hole and roll towards the hole. Only when the pin is placed up close to the front of the green should the average player attempt backspin.

Like all golf shots visualize the shot prior to attempting the shot. Great pitchers not only have good mechanics they are also great at visualization. They pick a spot on the green that they want to land the ball and visualize it rolling toward the hole. Visualizing increases your creativity. Creativity increases your ability to make good pitches. Practice seeing the shot in your minds eye prior to executing. You will be amazed at how this simple exercise increases your confidence and your successful execution.

The biggest mistake many amateurs make is trying to scoop the ball into the air. If your timing is just right, you can get the ball airborne, however it will lack distance. The normal result from attempting to lift the ball is a skull, a low flying screamer. A golf ball is lifted into the air properly when it is compressed into the ground by the club face. This compression gives the ball lift and distance. Without compression you will loose one or both. Any iron from the five to a wedge has plenty of loft to get the ball airborne. Use your clubs loft, a lot of mechanical engineering has gone into designing those clubs. Trust me, they can do the job.

Another mistake I see many players make is attempting to hit down into the ball. Which results in a fat shot with lots of turf flying everywhere. For years golfers have been told that in order to hit a good pitch shot you need to hit down on the ball. This, however, is not entirely accurate. The goal is to hit the ball before the ground. This does not mean hitting down. A good pitch will strike the ball just before striking the ground, leaving a shallow divot. I like to see a normal arc in the swing.

Finally, all good pitches have good rhythm. The back swing, down swing and the follow through are all the same speed. With a lot of practice a great pitcher can increase the speed of their downswing with great results. For the rest of us, I recommend maintaining a good steady rhythm.

FIFA Friendly Match up Chile vs. Ivory Coast

On the road to Germany 2006 World Cup the qualifiers from the African region and Ivory Coast leaded by Henri Michel, prepare themselves in Paris against the soccer team of Chile.

With 7 games won, 1 draw and only 2 losses, in the overall qualify standings; the Ivory Coast seeks a great friendly match up to organize their final details on the road to the World Cup. An interesting game that will definitively show us as soccer fans and sports betting crew, that they are ready to rumble in Paris and Germany as well.
Didier Drogba, an inspirational captain that leaded the team to their first time participation in a FIFA World Cup tournament, is one of the keys to the finalizing preparation game on May 30.

The Ivory Coast, who is in group C, will play in Paris, against a team that didn’t reach a space in Germany 2006; but is going with a great potential squad to play. Chile showed their courage and good gaming against the 2 time World Cup winner Argentina, in the qualifiers. On 2 occasions, Chile wonderfully scored adding a point to their starting round against the big favorites. Unfortunately, in the next round, after playing against Paraguay and Uruguay, the Chilean dream disappeared; ending in the replacement of coach Juvenal Olmos for Nelson Acosta.

Chile with a great soccer technique, featured in 7 FIFA World Cup tournaments, being the last in 1998. “La Roja”, as known in Latin America and among international soccer andsports bettors, are more than prepare to play this friendly match up as good as it gets closer to Germany 2006.

This game is really interesting, due that Ivory Coast will debut in the FIFA tournament against Argentina and Chile played a great game against them before. This game will let us know, more about the new faces in the World Cup, with a lot of expectations from the Ivory Coat Soccer Federation and fans in general.

Road to Germany 2006, this game is a must to see, enjoy and bet on.

n sands of Acapulco the number one tourist destination in Mexico. Unlike everybody else, in Acapulco the National squad was there to get in tune early for the most important soccer competition in the planet. In Acapulco the squad received a lot of support from their fans that gave a boost to their morale.

Pavel Pardo said: “The most important thing for me is that the Mexican people are 100 per cent behind the national team. At the end of the day, you’re not just representing one sector of society; you’re carrying the hopes of 100 million Mexicans.”

The “Tricolor” as it’s called in Mexico spent about five days of hard work on the beach. They did the hard physical work in Acapulco to head back to Mexico City with some good fitness work behind them. The next few days should see the players enjoying considerably more time with the ball.

They’re getting ready to head to Europe in the final stage of their preparation for the Soccer World Cup. They will face France on May 27th one of the most important friendly games of the squad.

On the other hand, France coach Raymond Domenech will take just his squad of 23 players and nobody else to a FIFA World Cup training camp later this month. Domenech, who has until 15 May to unveil his final list, said no reserves would be invited to the camp from 22-26 May in the French Alps resort of Tignes.

“I thought about it carefully and I don’t think it would be a good thing to bring players who would need somebody else to get injured to make the squad,” Domenech told French radio channel RTL.

Coach Domenech wants to avoid what happened in France 98, back then six players were told to leave France’s training camp at the last minute.

The French team is preparing to face Mexico on May 27th in a game that’s expected to be one of the most difficult friendly matches in their World Cup preparation; they’ll have the opportunity to measure against another head of group, and a different style of play than the European soccer.

Most sports books will certainly have a line for this exciting friendly match that will meet two very good soccer teams and hopefully allow the fans to enjoy a very good game.

Golf Swing Thoughts Help Develop Consistency

Swing thoughts on the practice range are an unquestioned strategy. They simplify a complex situation. They speed the learning process. And they help develop trust in your swing. How about during a match? Do swing thoughts help there? What are the best swing thoughts to have?

While instructors differ on which are the best swing thoughts during a match, they all agree on one thing: Thoughts like “Keep your elbow tucked in,” Finish with your belt buckle facing the target,” or “Keep your head still” only foul up your swing when playing. In fact, many golf tips on swing thoughts reject the whole idea.

It’s not that these thoughts are bad. They’re not. They’re right on target. Entire golf lessons are designed around them. And they’re great in practice. They keep you focused on what you’re doing.

But eliminate them during a match. Why? They focus on swing mechanics and that’s something to avoid when actually swinging a club. Check any golf instruction manual. They will tell you the same thing: You can’t command your body to work in a certain way when hitting the ball. Trying to do so creates more problems than it solves.

Instead, focus on your target. That, after all, is your real goal. Forget about where your hands are or where your hips are. Concentrate on where you want the ball to land and link to it creatively and emotionally. Develop a mental picture of that spot and keep it in mind as you swing.

If you must have a swing thought, keep it simple. And non-mechanical. Many PGA pros focus on a single thought, which eliminates thoughts about swing mechanics.

Ernie Ells keeps this thought in mind when he swings “Low and slow.” That’s it. He doesn’t think about where his hands are, where his weight is, or where his body is going to end up. That’s for when he’s taking a golf lesson from his swing coach. Instead, he focuses on taking the club back low and slow, eliminating everything else.

Fred Shoemaker, author, a pioneer in golf instruction, and founder of the golf school Extraordinary Golf, is adamant about swing thoughts. Replace thoughts about your mechanics with thoughts about the “feel” of your swing. Think about tempo and rhythm rather than where and when. If you must have a swing thought, says Fred, have one that reinforces the feel of your swing.

Fred has his students practice throwing clubs to emphasize this idea. At first, they throw a club 15 feet. Then, they throw one with a slightly fuller swing, about 25 feet or so. After about 200 throws, they throw one with a complete golf swing. Of course, this club throwing is done under strict supervision and safety conditions.

Once Fred’s students master club throwing, they move to the tee. The goal there is remembering how it feels to throw a club when you hit a ball. They focus on that idea and that idea alone.

Another approach is to have a thought that triggers something in your swing, thoughts that

• Mentally in-plant your target line
• Mimics the actual swing
• Produces a smooth take away
• Triggers the downswing.
• Promotes relaxation while swinging

Establish a target line for your ball flight before you address the ball. Keep that thought in mind when you hit and try to copy it with your ball flight. That forces you to keep the target line in mind, not your mechanics.

Most professional golfers take a few practice swings before they address the ball. They want the feel of the swing before they hit the ball. Recreational golfers ought to do the same. Take a few practice swings. Remember how it feels. Keep that “feel” in mind when you hit.

Focus on a thought that promotes a smooth takeaway. Slow and easy. Or, slow and smooth. Anything that produces a nice takeaway helps. Remember, the takeaway and backswing do one thing: position you for the downswing.

The downswing begins the chain reaction of feet, knees, thighs, and shoulders. Any thought that triggers this chain reaction helps deliver the blow at impact. Try thoughts like, “Plant your left heel,” or “Slide your left knee toward the target.” Anything that helps you transfers your weight to your left side works well.

Also try to complete the backswing in a relaxed manner. Think of anything that will occupy the time between your takeaway and the completion of your backswing. That brief time is critical. It’s when golfers think about their mechanics instead of their targets.

Consistency is every golfer’s goal. To achieve it, we need a swing that is repeatable under pressure every time we play. Developing that swing, however, isn’t easy. It takes hard work and plenty of practice.

Having a thought process that repeats itself time and time again helps you develop that swing as well. If the metal side of your game syncs with the physical side, achieving swing consistency gets easier. More importantly, it cuts strokes from your game, which, in turn, generates a lower handicap.

Jack Moorehouse publishes a free weekly newsletter with the latest golf tips and instruction and has helped thousands of golfers lower their handicaps quickly. He is the author of the best-selling book How To Break 80.
