25 Common Link Exchange & Search Engine Terms

In today’s world of website promotion and traffic building, a whole new set of terms and definitions have developed. To be a successful webmaster and/or website owner, it is important to know the meanings of some of the most popular link exchange and search engine terms.

1. Algorithm: The mathematical computation used by major search engines to determine which web pages will be displayed in query (search) results.

2. Click-through rate (CTR): The total number of possible clicks on a web page divided by the actual number of times a link on that same page is clicked.

3. Cloaking: The process of sending a version of a web page to a search engine that is different from the one a user sees on the site. Cloaking is considered to be unethical but is often used to increase the potential ranking of a website. Most of the search engines will penalize a website or web page if they discover it is cloaking.

4. Dead link: A hyperlink that does not lead to a page or site. This usually occurs when a server is down, the page has been moved or deleted, or the site no longer exists.

5. Directory: An index or list of websites compiled by people and usually organized by topic or theme.

6. Doorway page: A page that has been created for the sole purpose of attempting to get a higher ranking in the search engines. Most of the major search engines will penalize websites that use doorway pages.

7. Hidden text: Text that is visible to the search engine robots or spiders, but not to the website visitors. Hidden text is mostly used to add extra keywords to a page without adding additional content. Most of the major search engines will penalize websites that use hidden text.

8. Hyperlinks: Used to link one or more documents or pages together.

9. Inbound link: The links that direct users to another website. When a user arrives at one site from another site, that link is known as an inbound link.

10. Keyword: A word or phrase which is used when searching for a website in the search engines or directories. These are the words or phrases that webmasters use to describe or explain the content of their website.

11. Keyword Density: Represents the frequency that keywords appear on a page. Keyword density is the ratio of a keyword or key phrases to the total number of words on a particular page. This is an important issue for search engine rankings. The more often the keyword appears on a page - the higher its search engine ranking. However, if the keywords are repeated too often, it could lead to the page being penalized for spamming.

12. Link Building: The process of creating inbound links to your website. This can be accomplished by requesting reciprocal links, being listed in e-zines, newsletters, and directories.

13. Link Exchange or Reciprocal Links: The process where two webmasters agree to place each other’s link on their website.

14. Link Exchange Program: Most link exchange programs are where webmasters sign up and agree to host and link to a member’s only directory or links page.

17. Meta Description Tag: The tag present in the header of a web page that provides a short description of the contents of the page and/or the website.

18. Meta Keywords Tag: The tag present in the header of a web page that lists words which represent or explain the content in the body of the page and/or the website.

19. Pay Per Click Search Engine: A search engine in which the ranking of the sites is based on the amount paid for each click from that search engine to the site.

20. Outbound link: A link that directs users to another website. When a user arrives at a new site from your site, that link is known as an outbound link.

21. Search Engine: A computerized index of the web pages which creates a searchable database. Examples are Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

22. Search Engine Placement/Optimization: The process of ensuring that a website ranks high in the major search engines.

23. Spider: Also called robots or crawlers. This is a software program used by search engines to crawl the internet, storing URLs and indexing the keywords and text on web pages.

24. Traffic: The actual visitors to a website.

25. URL: (Uniform Resource Locator) is used to designate the address of a website.

There are countless websites in the internet and more are being created everyday. The first thing a person needs to know is how to build ones own website. An individual who knows how to create a website can do it easily. If one is unsure of how to begin, it is best to ask the help of an expert for guidance during the construction.

5 Channels for Targeted Traffic

In online business world, majority of people would say that advertising is the life blood for website traffic, and for reaching the market. Whether you are selling a product, or providing a service, you got to somehow advertise to get the desired traffic to your business website.

However, not all traffic to your site is equal in the measure of producing the business result. Yes, there are tones of options that would somehow help to drive lots of traffic, but it would not bring you the desired result simply because those are not targeted potential visitors that would produce result or become your real paying customers.

Forgo all those hype about paid to surf, free traffic programs, the bottom line is you need real and targeted traffic to your site. For me, these are some low cost channels that I zoom into in helping to generate the much needed yet targeted traffic. These channels had helps me in bringing the desired visitors I need without me having to crack my head and start chasing after them.

1. Website Positioning
Ask yourself truthfully, “What’s your site all about?”
Are you providing information? Or more towards providing search? Or simply just pages with yet more links?

You need to clearly position your website. If you are not even sure about its direction, how would visitors ever be sure of what to expect from it? Clearly define what your site is all about:-

• If you are going to provide information, then make your website’s description to be clear.

• If you are going to provide search and further information, also clearly let visitors know about it.

• If you are going to sell something useful to visitors, let them be aware of it. Don’t try to bait them. You’ll be losing them anyway if you try to mislead visitors.

2. Share your experiences.
Well, you don’t have to put up your resume on your site. And also, nobody is going to be expert in everything. Rather, concentrate on your own niche area that you are very much familiar with.

You could just share your experience and encounter along these years when trying to achieve something, or make it some kind of daily online. You could very well start a blog of your own!

In today context, blogs are very popular tool. Search engines love them so much because of new contents are added frequently. Your own blog could be an ideal place to share with visitors of what and how you are doing so far.

If you yet to explore this option, the great part about blog are that it could point links back to your own website! When search engine spider stops by blog, it would crawl and index its latest content. For this, do add some brief information about your own site; activate it with live link pointing back to your own site. Check out the “V B Code” if you need help as to how to post signature. Not forgetting, you need to check the forum rules whether they allow signature or not.

4. Start your own forum.
If you are familiar with forum script and could spend considerable time online, you could also start your own forum. Provide a place where your own visitors can interact with you and also among each other. In fact, there are lots of such free services and tools available out there for this. You can use these tools to either host a forum, or install the script onto your website host server and host it there.

5. Produce Your Own Content.
To some, producing own work or content is just as killing task. Not to be fooled by this, producing you own work is not really that extreme hard. Recall the time when you were back in school writing some essay or thesis? Yes, it’s the same. Writing articles is not that killing hard.

For webmaster like us, producing own work via writing articles is truly a great channel of getting new fresh traffic to our website. Also, there are lots of article publishing network out there with different topics. Share your articles there, publish it there, and get your articles to be distributed out further via the network.

Like myself, what I do basically is write up an article and add “Resource Box” or “About the Author” that provide live links pointing back to my network of sites. Yes, it is just like adding your signature when posting in forum. After which, let the ezine publishers and visitors or readers know that you do allow them to re-print and re-publish your article. Be it on their website or blogs, or even on their own newsletter.

Write your article and publish it frequently, there are so many content publishers who go to the article and ezine directories to grab new fresh content to be re-publish in their newsletter. You will notice that there are simply too websites and ezine on almost any topic. Same principle, concentrate on your area of expertise, and you will be receiving new traffic source coming from these channels.

Examining the above 5 channels, whether you are just having a simple Online Business or well designed and built Internet Empire, you could drive more traffic to your own website. And best of all, these 5 low cost channels will be bringing targeted traffic too.

Good Traffic is Targeted Traffic

Targeted traffic: the demographic

Assuming your business is motorcycles, my first guess at your target demographic would be 16-25 year old males and 50+ year old wealthy retired couples. Breaking it down further, if you sell Suzuki crotch rockets, you can safely discard the wealthy retired group. Narrow the demographic as best you can to target potential customers. Paying for traffic that isn’t dense with people interested in what you’re selling is a waste of your advertising dollar.

Once the demographic is well defined, you can begin identifying and sorting out perspective advertisers. Determining whether a particular advertiser or marketing group is going to work for you can be rather difficult, unless you’ve personally used them before. This is where experience and networking with other webmasters comes in very handy. Talk to other webmasters who’ve advertised with the company, find out what they were advertising, and ask them how the campaign went and if they plan to advertise on that website again. I don’t generally use an advertiser unless I’ve heard very good things from other webmasters or they have a trial ad setup, where you can commit a small amount of money to testing out the traffic before you make a real investment and buy several weeks or months of advertising with them.

An important consideration when buying ad space on a specific website is the focus of that website. If you’re considering advertising on a service oriented website, make sure your product or service compliments that website’s service. For instance, if you sell shoes, advertising on hotmail.com is going to be very inefficient and expensive. You’ll be paying to advertise to a bunch of people, the mass majority of which aren’t looking to buy shoes. However, if you’re selling a spyware removal tool, email services could be a great place to advertise. Most internet users have spyware on their computers, and most are aware of and concerned about spyware.

Advertising on content based sites

When I need to advertise, my favorite place to go is still a content oriented site with a close relationship to my product or service. If I’m selling Gregory backpacks, I’ll look for advertising opportunities on websites related to backpacking and hiking, such as outdoors guides and wilderness survival websites.

Web traffic at some content based sites is not particularly targeted, while others have a specific topic, like a gardening tips website. Finding a website with a very specific interest may or may not be as important, depending on what product you’re selling, or what service you offer. T-shirts may sell well on lots of different content based sites, while the gardening weasel isn’t likely to do well on places not related to gardening.

An update schedule of content based websites you’re considering advertising on is rather important, depending on how you advertise. A website that updates every other day or weekly will have many visitors who come for the updates and leave. A website that updates sporadically will have more people who come just looking for something new. When there is nothing new they’re more likely to look for other related links, which is where good advertising kicks into high gear. Of the three major advertising types, I tend to believe in doing my homework and paying flat rates for given periods of time. This seems to work best, because it depends more on you to build an intriguing advertisement, and rewards you for doing so.

Buying ad space on a per click basis can be a better bet if you’re trying to build a brand name, because your ad might get 50,000 impressions before the 1,000 click-through you paid for happen.

Conversion rates are key

For most of us on the web though, our main goal is to sell the product or service. This is why I contest doing your research, finding the best websites, and purchasing ad space on a weekly or monthly basis is the best method of promotion in the long run. If you’re smart, you’ll monitor your traffic from different sources and determine the cost per sale to see which sources are providing the best conversion rates. In the case of buying click through traffic, the monitoring program should give you the traffic conversion rate.

Want to know a methodology to learn the exact effectiveness of every e-marketing initiative you conduct? It’s a method that every company online should implement. It’s a must-have if you’re actively trying to leverage your web presence to increase your bottom line.

One of the great aspects of the Internet and e-marketing is its ability to give immediate results and feedback regarding all kinds of online activities. This of course requires tracking.

Let us delve into the world of tracking. Part 1 of this two part series will explain the basics of e-marketing tracking. Part 2 will provide a fool-proof method for website statistical acquisition.

If you rent some banner ad space at a website whose audience is your target market, you can learn exactly how many people saw your banner ad and how many clicked through to your site. You can also determine how many people actually became a lead from the banner ad and even see how many were converted into a sale.

If the numbers were low the first time around, you can create a new banner ad and submit it again, then track those results. You can keep tweaking ad infinitum until you discover the perfect combination of design, copy and presentation that yields the best results. This is one of the wonders of the Net. But you’ll need a way to make sense of all the numbers. And there will be a lot of numbers. Enter Web Analytics.

Here are the most important data points for an e-marketer:

1.Cost for campaign 2.Reach or total visits (in Netspeak, ‘eyeballs’) 3.Unique visits 4.Click-thru number 5.Click-thru percentage 6.Number of leads generated 7.Cost per lead 8.Lead conversion rate 9.Lead to sales ratio 10.Number of sales generated

In the banner ad example above, let’s say the statistics for a day are:

1.The banner ad’s cost for the day = $500 2.Total visits = 1000 3.Unique visits = 800 4.Click-thru number = 50 5.Click-thru percentage = 5% 6.Leads generated = 20 7.Cost per lead = $25 8.Lead conversion rate = 40% 9.Lead to sales ratio = 10% 10.Sales generated = 2

The daily, weekly or monthly visits to the site that houses your banner ad will be the reach or visits to the site. This number can be broken down to both total and unique visits. If there were a 1000 visits to that web page in a day but 200 of those visits were from the same people visiting twice in that day (and all the rest came only once), then total visits is 1000 and unique visits is 800. This is because if 200 people came to the site twice that day, then 200 of the total visits for the day were repeats which leaves 800 unique visitors (1000 - 200 = 800).

Continuing with the example, the number of people who view the banner ad and actually click on it over to your site is the click-thru number. The click-thru percentage is ascertained by dividing the number of click-thrus by the number of page visits. For example, if 50 people clicked-thru to your site from the banner, and there were a total of 1000 banner views (because there were 1000 views to that page that had the banner ad on it), then the equation would be 50 divided by 1000, or 5%. (You could also use the unique visits to calculate this percentage: 50/800 = 6.25%.)

Leads acquired is how many people actually filled out a form on your site or called as a result of the banner ad. In other words, the user saw the banner ad on another site, clicked the banner thru to your site, and then actually gave you their information via a web form or phone call.

Cost per lead is very important. The lower this is the better. You calculate this by dividing the total cost by the number of leads, in this case $500 divided by 20 leads, or $25 per lead.

The lead conversion rate is the percentage of new leads you obtained from the visitors driven to your web page as a direct result of the banner ad. Of course this page needs a call to action in order to convert a visitor to a lead. A call to action is a statement on the page that says “Call today” and gives a phone number or is a link that points someone to a web form.

If your banner ad cost $500 and you got 20 leads (leads acquired), then your cost per lead for this banner ad campaign was $25.

If 2 people out of the 20 new leads actually bought your product or service, then your lead to sales ratio is 1/10 or 10%.

Obviously, the whole point of all this is to increase the last number, our final sales. By monitoring all these numbers continuously and systematically, we can gain an almost omnipotent view of our various e-marketing campaigns. We can then leverage that knowledge to improve each initiative to yield the best results.

Linking software’s are great (not really) I’ve tried 2 programs myself, and I must say that both attempts were a disaster! Now I’m not saying that eventually that there will be a perfect software out there to promote your link exchange program.

Right now, here are some of the problems

- The links that you will find are not relevant to your sites content.

- Some links tend to be “Link Farms” that only harm your search engine performance.

- You’ll tend to get millions of porn sites!

and so on…

Here’s a method that holds very strong when I look for link partners:

When I find a great resource that has similar content to my site, I will browse through their ENTIRE “Resourceful Links” listed on their site and see if It’s a good idea to link to them!

Here’s another method of doing this effectively for best results:

If you happen to find a great resource, enter their entire “URL” in www.google.com.

What you need to look for is this:
“Find web pages that link to www.this-site.com

The Purpose Martin?

Once you click on the “pages that link to that site” you will find sites that already have a great link program related to your site!

Take advantage of linking to all the sites listed within that search on google!

PLEASE TRY TO AUTOMATE YOUR LINK
EXCHANGE PROGRAM!

It gets very flustering for an entrepreneur like me who is trying to have a really good source of link exchanges, especially when I have to e-mail my companies information manually!

Try adding a “Mail Script” that takes the link exchange information right from your site! You’ll find that more sites will want to link to yours!

Here’s an example of what your form should ask:

1) Full Name: Martin Lemieux
2) WebSite URL: http://www.smartads.info
3) Title: Smartads.Info :: Marketing & Advertising Centre
4) Description: (250 characters or less)

Smartads :: Learn everything about Link Exchanges, Search Engines Submissions, Advertising & Marketing Tips, Web Design, Special Canadian Sites. Promotion & Traffic Resources

5) Our link on your site: http://www???
6) E-mail: youre-mail@yoursite.com
7) Comments:
8) SUBMIT

That’s all you really need!!!

Another little “Timbit”,
Give visitors your link information!

Please add your “Link Information” that you would want visitors to add on their site! I’ve gone to too many sites were I had to spend over 5 minutes trying to find their “Link Exchange” information!

Now I’m not talking about a link on your site to your link program, I’m talking about the information you would give to other sites in order to exchange links!

Denying link exchanges!

Get ready, it happens to all of us! Don’t get upset when a company you just linked to has just denied your link exchange! Many companies out there has STRICT guidelines they are looking for. You may have not read their specific rules they have! Don’t worry about it, take a note and move on.

There’s another 1,000 000 that will link to you so don’t go have a drink from one denial! I know we all hate them but just remember, we’ve all got them!

In the future, when you’re put in a situation were you will be the one denying another site for a link exchange, just remember how you felt at the time and be considerate to the other by telling them WHY they were denied. I often replied to the site that denied my site to ask why my site wasn’t accepted and often I am surprised to hear the reason. what they had to say!
